Helping Stellenbosch Hospice to offer compassionate care

Associate Professor George Nel, from the School of Accountancy, is making a meaningful impact through his role as treasurer at Stellenbosch Hospice – an organisation dedicated to providing palliative care of excellence to individuals and families affected by life-threatening or life-limiting diseases.

Stellenbosch Hospice aims "to provide palliative care of excellence" that enhances the quality of life for those in need. It achieves this by offering a holistic service encompassing physical, emotional, social, and spiritual care – supporting both patients and their families across broader Stellenbosch communities.

Nel became involved as treasurer because he wanted to ensure financial stability for this critical work: "As the treasurer of Stellenbosch Hospice NPC, I am committed to ensuring financial stability and transparency so we can provide essential palliative care to individuals facing life-threatening illnesses, particularly focusing on those without medical insurance to help bring dignity and comfort to those in need during challenging times."

The hospice has made significant strides in its mission. As a five-star COHSASA accredited institution, it has built strong partnerships with private and public service providers while engaging local communities. It provides comprehensive support that addresses the diverse needs of patients and their families, ensuring they receive assistance on multiple levels.

By offering his services to the Stellenbosch Hospice, Nel’s contribution embodies the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences centenary theme of “transforming the economy and society”.
